SOLAR LAMPS
CLCL gives solar lamps to all our sponsored children and other children in need. They are an inexpensive purchase that enables poor children to complete their homework at night. Most of the rural children in the Kaaga region have no access to electricity. The sun sets in their equator villages at about 7:00 pm each night. A typical rural child arrives home from school around 5:00 pm, oftentimes walking up to four kilometers. By the time they have made several lengthy trips to gather water and firewood, and eaten their meager meals, it is dark. Some of them light their homes with kerosene lamps, but this is an unsafe, inefficient, and smoky alternative. We have had more than one of our families lose their home due to a kerosene lamp fire.
GIVE A SOLAR LAMP
Solar lamps are the perfect choice. Sunlight abounds in Kenya. Even during the rainy season, there is enough sun to power the inexpensive solar lamps. Solar lamps need no batteries, are long lasting, and are safe.
For a mere $20, you can give a child a solar lamp, so they can complete their homework and have a chance to better themselves. When asked what things could help them to perform better in school, the second most common answer was a solar lamp so they could complete their homework. A solar lamp ranked second only to food.
