Sofia's father remarried and he and his wife had another daughter. Tragically his wife was killed in an road accident,  leaving him to care for both girls. Sofia's sister went to live with her maternal grandmother leaving Sofia with her father. Their life has been very hard. Sofia's father suffered an eye injury while working on a construction site. This has limited his ability to work. Part of his income goes to his mother-in-law to care for Sofia's sister. Sofia and her father often go to bed hungry and because of financial difficulties Sofia frequently misses classes.
